As a horse lover all my life, I rode horses both for fun and competed in events. When I was working on my Master's program, I began to do more research on animal assisted therapy and how it increased the overall levels of the serotonin in the brain, basically the stuff that makes us feel happy. I could see how people felt more at ease after working with a horse or just hanging out with a dog and talking openly to them. When people are calmer and not thinking about "what should I say and do, when working with my counselor," they are instead presently tuned in, not thinking about performing but just being themselves and that is why the healing process becomes more organic and less stressful. My interests branched into working with children with physical issues and learning disabilities to adults who have experienced trauma and could not verbalize how they were feeling. This became my specialized area of expertise and by working with horses and a clinician, this unique wellness combination helps clients develop their emotional toolbox to apply in both their personal and professional relationships.
